There’s the black done on this last batch of guys.
So tomorrow I’ll do the yellow – that’s the step I’m a bit worried about, although (to enter procrastination negotiation mode) if I get it, say, half done and finish the yellow Saturday morning I’ll still be able to finish everything up Saturday night in time to game on Sunday morning. And to get really negotiate-y, as long as I finish up the inceptor (who can’t be stuck to his base til he’s completely done as the sealant would frost the base up) I can play with the other three unpainted and finish them up next week. Hopefully it won’t come to that, though.
Someone asked yesterday how I do black. It’s way lazy – I start, as you saw yesterday, with a very heavy gray drybrush, moving up through VMC german gray, luftwaffe uniform, sky gray and white. Then over that I paint about a 50/50 mix of black paint and black ink, leaving just the edge highlights like you see here. I find the brush control for this a lot easier than what you need for edge highlights (which you usually have to fix anyway), and the paint / ink mix lets it be a bit translucent to let the gradient show along the edges a bit.
The big problem is that the yellow, when it goes on, tends to blow out the gray / white edge highlights entirely, but that’s just a factor of the paint scheme in the end.
Two more painting days ’til game day!
